GA4 setup
Mark key events
Fluxion reports conversions based on what you define as important. In GA4, those are key events. If everything is a key event, nothing is. Keep it tight.
A simple rule
Pick 1–5 actions you would celebrate if they went up. Mark those as key events. Leave the rest as normal events.
Examples (not a template)
- Lead gen site: form submit, booked call, sign-up complete.
- Ecommerce: purchase (and maybe begin checkout).
- SaaS: create account, start trial, upgrade.
Use your real business actions. Avoid vanity actions like “scroll” as a conversion.
Before you start
- Permissions matter. Google notes you’ll need the right property-level access to mark events as key events.
- If GA4 has already received an event, it will show up in the Events list and you can mark it as a key event. If it’s a brand-new event, it may not show up right away.
- Google allows up to 30 key events in standard properties, but Fluxion works best when you keep this list small.
Mark an existing event as a key event
- In GA4, go to Admin.
- Under Data display, click Events.
- Find the event in Recent events (or in the list on the right).
- Click the star icon next to the event to mark it as a key event.
Mark a new event as a key event
- In GA4, go to Admin → Data display → Events.
- Click + Create event.
- Name the event, then enable Mark as key event. (Google notes special characters aren’t allowed in event names.)
- Choose the default key event value and counting method (if those options are shown in your property), then click Create.
Once GA4 starts collecting that event, it will be treated as a key event going forward.
FAQ
What is a key event in GA4?
A key event is an event you’ve marked as important (a conversion) in GA4. Fluxion uses key events to report conversions, so choose only the actions that matter.
How many key events should I have?
Keep it small: usually 1–5. If you mark too many events as key events, conversion reporting becomes noisy and harder to interpret.
Why don’t I see my event in the Events list yet?
GA4 can only show events it has received. Trigger the event on your site first, then check again. For brand-new events, there may be a short delay before they appear.
Will marking an event as a key event change past data?
Key-event status applies going forward. If you need historical comparisons, expect a transition period where older dates may not reflect the new conversion definition.

Mark events as key eventsFluxion-specific note
If Fluxion conversion totals don’t match expectations, the first thing to check is which events are marked as key events and whether they are firing on the correct pages.
